68. Hero by Nollaig 68. Hero by Nollaig
Another piece for my 100 Themes Challenge! At long last. This randomly came to me the other day when I was thinking about the end of the TLK movie. You never see Nala reunited with her mom - which, in the context of the movie is fine, because for all we know the jungle is like less than 24 hours run from the Pridelands and she was only gone for a day. But adopting the attitude of 'Shadowland', the song from the musical - Nala didn't know if she'd ever be coming back. While Simba came home and saved everyone from Scar, Nala is just as much a hero in that she risked her life to find help in the first place. So, I decided to draw a picture of Sarafina welcoming her daughter home under the title 'hero'.

Nala is quite blatently referenced, and I'm kind of disappointed now that I decided to use that expression because it's so obvious, but I suck at drawing heads that are hanging down. I also now realise their eyes are too close to their muzzles and Nala's chin looks a little disfigured haha. Whoops! Anyway, I love how Sarafina turned out, I love their colours together, and I like the new comic-book style I tried with the sharp shadows. I may do more like this.

This is nothing short of touching! Fantastic work :) (if you ever get the urge to do an anatomy tutorial, go right ahead and act on it. Us watchers won't mind Wink/Razz )

Thank you very much! I dont really know anything about anatomy, I've just studied stills from the film enough to have a feel for how they're meant to look in different poses - but still half the time my stuff is anatomically wrong!

Anything that looks accurate is probably just referenced from something - also, in my experience (and this may or may not help you in terms of drawing anatomy) - there is often quite a difference between what is anatomically accurate, and what our minds percieve as accurate. I've often seen in TLK drawings a whole composition of a lion that looks perfect, but if I study the details it's anatomy is actually a bit off in order to create something more aesthethically pleasing to the eye. A very good test of this I find is mirroring your image - you may draw Simba's face, and it may look perfect - if it's anatomically correct you will be able to mirror the drawing and have it still look perfect, but MOST of the time, it will look distorted and inaccurate. So, one of many ways to improve anatomy is to 'look at it from another angle', by mirroring a sketch, fixing inconsistencies, mirror it back, fix any new ones that have arisen, etc. This should ultimately help you create something more accurate - I know it has helped me!

Sorry for the long reply, hopefully you'll find something useful in it XD
